Yangshuo (阳朔): Home of the 20 Yuan View

Guilin is famous for its karst mountains. When I think karst, I think caves. And there are some. But it's the mountains that are truly spectacular. I've never seen anything quite like them.

In particular, two hours outside the city is a county called Yangshuo which is famous for being depicted on the back of the 20 Yuan bill. Unfortunately, the large numbers of tourists make the reproduction of that particular image impossible, but the scenery is still truly stunning and the boat ride was quite enjoyable.

The boats are made to resemble traditional bamboo boats, but are made from PVC tubing. Still, a nice ride.

There were dragonflies everywhere and a managed to get a few pictures when they landed on the boat.

Although the prettiest views were from the river, the mountains stretch on and on and are part of the cityscape as well in both Guilin City and Yangshuo.

  1. I have seen photos of mountains this shape in the S Pacific Islands. I wonder how they were formed. Volcanic?

    1. Karst topography is formed from the rock (limestone) dissolving. In this area the features are particularly dramatic because their is some uplift from India colliding with Asia and the monsoon climate means there's a lot of rain in the warm season, dissolving the stone more rapidly than elsewhere. I don't know about the S. Pacific!
